Before we begin, click here to watch the best movie trailer I have seen in a very long time (hint: it is the Aladdin trailer). The story is there. Not all the funny parts are in the trailer...for once. They added a few really awesome treatments to the video. It is just really cool (sorry I am just geeking out over here).
We all know the story of Aladdin. If you are a millennial, you grew up watching all the Disney Classics...including Aladdin. You wanted to be just like Jasmine. You swooned over how handsome Aladdin was. You wanted to be best friend with the Genie. You despised Jafar. I could keep going on forever. So when I heard Disney was adding Aladdin to their docket of classics being remade into a live action movie, I got nervous. Let me tell you why.
Walt Disney is currently in the process of remaking all their Disney Classics into real live action movies....which is totally okay if they do their classics justice. This all started with the real live action version of 101 Dalmatians in 1996. But just recently ramped up pushing all these live action movies out with Beauty and the Beast in 2017, Christopher Robin in 2018, and Dumbo earlier this year. Now if you remember, I went to see Dumbo and it was just okay. Nothing really special in the live action version of the movie. Because Dumbo was just okay, I was nervous that Aladdin was just going to be okay. I am happy to say that I was very wrong. Aladdin wasn't okay. Aladdin was amazing! It is largely due to these two factors:
1. I have now seen this movie twice in theaters (and it just came out five days ago). Both times I have watched the movie from a D-Box seat. You all know I know I love a great D-Box seat. I mean, how could you go to a movie about going on a magic carpet ride and not experience that in a D-Box seat? Anyways, it was the best D-Box experience I have ever had! I thought Shazam! was really good. This was amazing! I was a little nervous the second time because I was afraid it was all in my head and it wasn't going to be as amazing as the first time. But it was almost better! I smiled through the whole movie. When the Genie was announcing Prince Ali coming into town, it was just an incredible experience that is hard to put into words. This probably gave the movie an extra point or two but it was totally worth it.
2. I know one of the actors was very nervous and actually turned down the part in this movie because of who played the character previously. They didn't want to follow up that performance because it was so iconic. I mean Robin Williams did do a phenomenal job playing the Genie (and Peddler) in the 1992 version but let it be known, Will Smith is the Genie of our time! He did just as good as Robin Williams because he wasn't trying to be Robin Williams. He was Will Smith. He brought his personality, his humor, and his fun-loving spirit to this character. Right before I see a movie, I like to see what the Rotten Tomatoes reviews and ratings are. One critic said Will Smith was bland in this movie. I don't know what was up that critic's butt but Will Smith was anything but bland in this movie.
Overall, this movie was a pleasant surprise. The music was amazing. The colors were so vibrant. The characters were having fun. It has humor for all ages (greatly thanks to Will Smith). It is a movie that just leaves you smiling and uplifted.
