Welcome to another review of a cult classic. It might be hard to believe, but there are a TON of cult classics I haven't seen before. Classics like E.T., Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Halloween, The Blues Brothers, and When Harry Met Sally. Rocky was in this list until it came up at a local theater in town (and because my best friend considers Rocky 4 to be her favorite movie and threatened not to be my friend anymore if I didn't see it at some point). So we went...and I loved it. This movie was not what I expected though.
I've seen clips of Rocky before because of all the pop-culture references that come from the movie. I mean the stair scene/training montage is so iconic and makes me want to go to Philadelphia. The scene at the end of the movie when Rocky is yelling for Adrian is another one. I can't count the times I have heard that scene before but never saw the movie.
The movie didn't not turn out the way I thought it would. I just assumed since there was a Rocky two, three, and four that Rocky would win the big fight at the end of the movie and go on to be a legend. Nope. That did not happen. Instead, he kicked a$? as expected but just couldn't pull it off at the end. I also wasn't expecting Adrian to be such a timid shy person. That came as a real surprise. I just assumed she was this flamboyant person that was going after Rocky not the other way around. And lastly, I wasn't expecting Rocky to be a street fighter that was chosen to fight. I just assumed he had been in other fights leading up to the big fight. It's like the whole movie for me was one giant surprise after another.
Again - heard about the movie, never cared to watch it before. Which is weird because I do love a good sports movie. Movies like Radio, Hoosiers, Coach Carter, and Miracle. AND I am a huge gamer and really into playing UFC on PS4. Overall, I generally enjoyed the movie and am adding the rest of the series to my watchlist. There was one small slow part right before the fight that didn't really add to the movie (calm yourself movie friend). But overall the movie was super engaging, had me rooting for Rocky, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Before seeing the movie - they played a video outlining a few facts about how the movie was filmed. In the shot where Rocky makes it all the way up the stairs and is doing his victory dance, it was actually played backward in the movie. I coudn't actually hear why they did that but you could tell when the scene came on that a few of his motions were a little off. Sorry for ruining that scene forever for you.
