Plot: A deactivated female cyborg is revived, but cannot remember anything of her past life and goes on a quest to find out who she is.*
Let's start this review off with a little bit of background information about the movie, shall we? This movie is based on a graphic novel (or what I would call a comic book) created in the early '90s. Alita: Battle Angel, the movie, was adapted from those graphic novels. How many of those graphic novels - I have no idea. This movie was also written by the very talented James Cameron, who also wrote Avatar and Titanic. So you would think this movie has to be good with that kind of track record. Well...
The movie starts out kind of slow. (Spoiler alert) the doctor played by Christoph Waltz finds this almost dead cyborg and brings her back to life. Then the movie takes a turn and starts to follow this serial killer and how the cyborg thinks it's the doctor but it turns out it isn't. Then the movie takes another turn into the cyborg falling in love with a human which goes off on a tangent about how her new lover takes apart cyborg for a living. Then the cyborg finds her battle body...and another storyline and another and another. There were soooooooooo many storylines, you really feel like it was one graphic novel right after another. It was very disjointed which made it hard to follow and get into.
In the movie, there is a lot of what they call "rollerball" which is basically rollerblading after a ball which you need to get into a hole all while basically being pushed in typical roller derby style. All the shots of rollerball were pretty cool. You can tell A LOT of CGI went into this movie which made all the fight scenes super cool. I have one complaint though - could you not adapt the movie into something we do today? I mean how many people really rollerblade anymore. Why not make it Boosted Board Derby or something?
Now the movie ends with Alita coming out for the champion rollerball event and pointing up at the city in the sky with her sword (it's another plot line that will take a least an hour to expand so just go with me) and a guy looking down at her almost like he was God. Literally, that is how the movie ends. They did that because the idea was this movie would be the start of many Alita and spin-off movies to come. They basically wanted to copy Marvel's genius movie plan. Well, Alita: Battle Angel did bad at the box office, I am pretty sure that will never happen. Also maybe try to put more effort (not necessarily money because 200 million wasn't enough apparently - just more thought) into the first of a huge series because this was no Iron Man. It didn't leave watchers wanting more.
Kind of off subject but since I have been explaining my movie-going experience lately, I wanted to set-up where I saw this movie too. It was in a new theater in town that is supposed to be state of the art. The theater looked great, functioned well, has the typical overpriced concessions and a guest services desk. The seats not only recline, but it has an adjustable headrest and heat feature. I typically get really cold during movies at my normal theater so I was excited to try out the heated seat. I will never turn that function on again unless I am shaking because I am so cold. Put my feet up with a heated seat function and it turns into the perfect recipe for sleep. So yes I feel asleep (during a very slow part of the movie) but mainly because the seat was too perfect. I won't be doing that again.
