Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is about teen Miles Morales becoming the Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.*
This movie was never on my "Must See" list or even my "There is nothing out so this is my last resort" list. I did not want to see this movie. But then it was nominated for the Best Animated Film at the 2019 Oscars. So I got curious...I should have trusted my gut feeling though.
Let's begin with the only two things I liked about the movie. First, the movie looks exactly like a comic book. The movie even had the texture you would get from reading a physical comic book. Very small detail but it's the small details that really make the difference. Second, I LOVED when there was a fight scene that the editors added in the WOW and the BLAM graphics you would see to highlight the fight in a comic book to show emphasis. Very clever of the film's creators.
This is where the good ends for me.
Let's talk about Spiderman for just a second. Is it just me or are there a lot of Spiderman (or in this case Spider-man) movies? There was one in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2017, this one in 2018 AND there is another one coming out in 2019! My question: HOW MANY SPIDERMAN MOVIES DO WE NEED?! I am giving this movie such a low score because I am tired of all the Spiderman movies.
Now - let's talk about the actual movie. When the movie started, a lot of it was blurry and jerky looking. It was because the creators of the movie wanted to give that authentic comic book look. But it was very hard to watch and almost made me nauseous. After 20 minutes, you got use to the feel but still just wasn't a fan. The animation of the characters was very good, even life like - I'm not knocking that. I just hated how the movie all came together. It wasn't smooth at all.
Second, I fell asleep. The movie was too long. It didn't really hold my attention very well. And I felt like some of the characters lacked enthusiasm. Let's take Chris Pine for instance. Was he even acting? He was more like just talking in his normal voice...it was really weird. Maybe he was tired.
All in all - the graphics saved this movie for me. I don't understand how it is an Oscar Best Animated Film nominee. It doesn't make sense.
