When I was booking tickets for this movie and I saw it was still available with D-Box seats, I jumped right away (because who doesn't want to feel like they are riding on a dragon - am I right?). D-Box seats give the illusion of movement and are timed with the screen, in order to make the audience feel like they're tilting back and forth or moving up or down. The seats also vibrate and shake in time with explosions and other kinds of action sequences. Personally, this really made me feel more connected to the movie.
Now, I didn't see the first or second How to Train Your Dragon movies but I have to say - this was the best animated film of the year...so far. It has a wonderful storyline that left me wanting a toothless and light fury of my own. I can't imagine being a six-year-old going to see this movie and not falling in love with these two dragons.
Let's start with the storyline. There were a couple of slow spots but for the most part, the movie really moved along. There was something for everyone in this movie. There was fun and laughter for the kids and some really great lessons for the parents (like letting your child grow up and be there own person and let them go...hint, hint, mom). Overall, the movie was very engaging and entertaining.
I am a graphics person. By day, I actually work in the marketing field and build a lot of graphics. Nothing like this but I probably appreciate graphics a bit more than your average moviegoer. With that being said, the graphics in this movie for me revival Avitar, especially in the hidden world. Everything from the colors, animation of the water to look so realistic, and the super small details of texture, it really was incredible. The person I went with even said they really enjoyed the hidden world scenes.
We can't talk about this movie without talking about the voices of the characters. Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera voice the two main characters and did such a great job bringing their personalities to the screen. There were quite a few surprise voices that I didn't know or recognize in the movie though. Cat Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, and Kit Harington played the main supporting cast and really do a great job.
I could see this really opening up a child's imagination to wonder if there is a hidden world like this somewhere in the real ocean. I would highly recommend the movie, especially for a family night. Both parents and kids will enjoy it. Personally, I would watch it again if I saw it on Netflix.
