Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 Stars)
The Favourite is set in early 18th century England, where a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs that country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives her charm endears her to Sarah.* The movie is a Biography - which means it's an account of someone's life written by someone else.
Let's talk about The Favourite. What a shocking, weird, and confusing movie. I mean I wanted to rate the movie 🤷🏻♀️ instead of 4 stars but didn't think that was a good rating system. I have a LOT of questions for the director and anyone that nominated this movie for Best Picture at the 2019 Oscars. I understand why each of the leading females are nominated but Best Picture? Really Acadamy?
Here are my questions.
When it comes to the way a movie is filmed, you want to be cautious about getting the shot without taking away from the storyline happening. During the movie, there were points where the director, Yorgos Lanthimos, chose to use a fisheye lens. (For anyone that doesn't understand that - A fisheye lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic feel.) My question is why the fisheye look Yorgos? It took away from what the characters were talking about for me. I believe it was unnecessary and didn't add to the overall picture.
I am a graphic designer by day. Which means any amount of un n e ces sa r y s p ac e in text bothers the shit out of me. So the title of the movie, the text slides in the movie, and the credits made my skin crawl. However, the layout of the movie was very interesting and probably my favourite (<- see what I did there) part. It was laid out almost like an 18-century book. That is a very nice touch.
The movie really showcases the relationship that Queen Anne had with both Lady Sarah and Abigail. The confusing part for me was the end. I was so confused by the rabbit, Abigail, and Queen Anne transparent overlay that I literally stayed seated with a look of huh? as the credits started rolling. It was very abrupt. It felt like there was more story that needed to happen. It was just strange. I still feel confused and dumbfounded by how the movie ended.
Now during this movie, I was a bit distracted by the fact two adults decided to come to the movie late, kinda drunk, and makeout for 50% before leaving 20 minutes before it was over. It was strange and very distracting. If you want to do this, just rent a movie at home. Moviegoers of the world thank you in advance.
All in all the movie was interesting and probably something I will never watch again. But I'm glad I saw it before the Oscars. I feel like I understand a bit better why Olivia Colman (who played Queen Anne) was nominated for Actress in a Leading Role, and why both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone were nominated as Actress in a Supporting Role.
