Ever since the movie came out in late 2018 - I knew at some point I would love to see Bohemian Rhapsody. It wasn't until the movie won the 2019 Golden Globe Best Motion Picture Drama that I knew I had to see it before the Oscars.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the story of the legendary rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid in 1985.* The movie is a Biography - which means it's an account of someone's life written by someone else.
Now I was born after the band became famous - but I grew up listening to famous Queen songs without ever knowing it was Queen. Classics like "We Are The Champions", "We Will Rock You", and my high school choir teacher even tried to perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" at our winter concert one year. Enough though I have been listening to the music for years, I didn't really know anything about the band.
The movie starts out before Queen was a band and follows their career and the struggles they went through. The shocker for me was storyline of Freddie Mercury's life and the struggles he went through. From his addiction to drugs and alcohol to his sexuality being in question, it makes you wonder how he kept going all those years.
The movie was very inspiring with great cinematography - specifically over the Live Aid crowd and the sound mixing was amazing (obviously). Rami Malek (or as I would like to think of him - Mr. Robot) did an amazing job taking on this complicated character. Another great character was the unrecognizable Mike Myers who played Ray Foster. The wardrobe and the makeup of the whole band was very similar to the original band characters. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to those departments on their amazing work.
The theater I was in was packed. Every seat was taken, which is impressive beings that the movie had been out for two solid months by this point. The movie even got a few laughs from the audience and myself included. I thought it was a great movie. However, I don't think the movie was Best Motion Picture Drama winner worthy. Nomination - Yes. Winner - No
I wish the movie did more background or storyline on the rest of the band. In the movie, Freddie Mercury even said that he tried to go out on his own and the members he worked with were nothing like the members of Queen. But you don't really learn anything about the other band members. At one point during the movie, Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) said to bandmate Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) something about his wife and I instantly said "Wait - he is married? When did that happen?"
Overall, I would recommend this movie to any Queen, music, or friend to go see. The storyline is very powerful and the topics they cover are very relatable. Congrats to the whole Bohemian Rhapsody crew on your 2019 Golden Globe Best Motion Picture Drama win!
