Mary Poppins Returns takes place decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.*

Going into the movie, I thought it was going to be a remake of the original. Yes - I watched the trailer a few times and yes - I know the title is Mary Poppins Returns instead of Mary Poppins but I was still taken aback by the fact this was not a remake. But I think the surprised made the movie even better.

Let's start at the very beginning. I saw this movie in those motorized D-Box seats. They give the illusion of movement and is timed with the screen, in order to make the audience feel like they're tilting back and forth or moving up or down. The seats also vibrate and shake in time with explosions and other kinds of action sequences. This instantly made me feel more connected to the movie. I found myself actually smiling the majority of the movie because of the added movement.

The whole cast was phenomenal. Emily Blunt did an amazing job of continuing the Mary Poppins character that Julie Andrews established in 1964. It was like Julie hadn't aged and was playing the same role. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Julie Waters, Meryle Streep, and Colin Firth really did a great job portraying their characters. I haven't really seen Ben Whishaw in a lot of movies, so being my first exposure to him - I think he did a nice job.

The surprise standout performances for me were Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Tea Pot from the 1991 Beauty and the Beast) and Dick Van Dyke (who played Bert in the original Mary Poppins). Both of those surprises really made the movie extra special for me.

The movie itself was very entertaining. Not once did I find my mind drifting off on things that needed to get done or just my normal daydreaming. It moved along, there was enough action to really draw your attention in. One of my favorite things was the cartoon section. They go inside the broken pot to help a carriage get its wheel back on right which leads into a journey to a circus. What I liked about the cartoon section was not necessarily the lines and scripts. It was the look of the cartoon. It looked exactly like the cartoon section in the original Mary Poppins

I think what I liked most was the feeling it brought back from watching the movie with my mom as a kid. It is just a great family movie that is pure. A lot of times animated movies add in little innuendos (I mean - watch the Little Mermaid as an adult). I would diffidently recommend this movie for any family with children of any age.
