The Lego Movie 2 (3 ⭐️)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 Stars)

Plot: It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.*

I added this movie to my list after seeing the trailer in theaters a couple times. I thought "Hey I will give it a shot. It looks hilarious. I think Chris Pratt is super funny. What could go wrong?" Well...a lot. The movie was projected to hit $40 - $60 million in the opening weekend but fell short hitting only $34 million. I think the studio had a few things working against it.

First, The Lego Movie 2 originally had a release date of May 26th, 2017, but was pushed back until 2019 for the spin-off movies.* I think the studio made a mistake waiting to release the movie because all the pop-culture references were outdated. Which in turn took away some of the funniness.

Second thing, let's talk about that trailer for a second. I hate to say but the most entertains parts of the movie were in the trailer. Yes, there were some funny clips/surprises but the majority of the movie wasn't that funny. It's almost like they took the first 45 minutes of the movie and chopped all the funny parts into a 2-minute trailer. It was a little disappointing.

Finally, it's been FIVE YEARS since the first Lego Movie. The momentum of the first movie has fizzled out and it's hard to even remember what happened (granted I didn't watch the first one). But this movie is a continuum of the first movie. I mean it is called The Second Part but it's five years later. Come on Warner Bros. Picture - you know better.

Now I saw this movie in those motorized D-Box seats. So they give the illusion of movement and is timed with the screen, in order to make the audience feel like they're tilting back and forth or moving up or down. The seats also vibrate and shake in time with explosions and other kinds of action sequences. So instantly I feel more connected to the movie. I also saw the movie in 3D. So I should have been super engaged. Not only did I fall asleep, but the person I went with fell asleep at one point as well. That is a red flag for any movie.

I would like to talk more about the 3D for a second. If you are going to see this movie, I highly recommend seeing it in 3D. It was like the movie was made to be seen in 3D. The animated graphics were incredible. The way the graphics popped out in 3D was perfect. The depth of field was spectacular. This was probably my favorite part of the movie.
